LA STAMPA – Movies in theatres and in streaming right away: this is how the coronavirus will change cinema

Universal Pictures has made the first move: it will no longer maintain the usual 90 days period between the release of a new film in cinemas and its distribution on other platforms. The decision, motivated by the coronavirus pandemic, will certainly displease cinema owners, but it makes Universal the first historical studio in Hollywood to concretely attempt a modern cinema distribution model, inspired by Netflix and video streaming platforms.

“We hope and believe that people will still go to theaters where it is possible, but we understand that for people in different areas of the world this is becoming less and less possible,” said Jeff Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal.
