Christmas watchlist: 3 must-see films for the holiday season
The holiday season is the ideal time to catch up on films we’ve missed. We’ve selected three of our recent productions for you to watch or rewatch on Prime Video and NOW.
Bones and All, by Luca Guadagnino on Prime Video
Bones and All follows the story of first love between Maren, a girl learning to survive on society’s fringes, and Lee, a loner with a combative spirit. It’s a road trip of two young people, in constant search of identity and beauty, trying to find their place in a world full of dangers that cannot tolerate their nature. Starring Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet, and Mark Rylance.
The Lord of the Ants directed by Gianni Amelio, now on NOW
Late 1950s. Writer and intellectual Aldo Braibanti, a former partisan at odds with the Communist Party, runs a house-laboratory for artists frequented by young university students. Here, he meets Ettore, a young man from Bologna with whom he falls in love, and the feeling is mutual. Ettore’s family accuses Braibanti of “psychological plagiarism,” sending Ettore to a psychiatric clinic and taking Braibanti to court. The actual charge was a pretext for the real accusation: homosexuality.
Marx Can Wait written and directed by Marco Bellocchio, available on NOW
An introspective journey by Marco Bellocchio, focusing particularly on Camillo, his twin brother who died on December 27, 1968. Camillo died in the iconic year of 1968, a time of revolution that never attracted him; he didn’t feel part of the revolutionary youth, even telling Marco in their last meeting that “Marx can wait.” The film explores the somber themes of grief and pain.
