Rome, November 4, 1921: Following a long train journey that symbolized the nation’s collective embrace, the remains of an unidentified soldier who perished in the Great War were interred at the Vittoriano in a public ceremony. Maria Bergamas, the mother of Antonio, a young lieutenant who died in battle and whose body was never found, was chosen to select the remains from eleven soldiers representing those who fell on Italy’s various war fronts.
